Haili volleyball tourney

The 60th annual Haili Volleyball Tournament will host the junior championship matches at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hilo Civic.

On Thursday and Friday, adult matches will start at 9 a.m. with the adult championships set for Saturday at Hilo Civic running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There are eight teams each in the men’s and women’s AA or top division.

Fujimoto scholarships

Applications are being accepted for the 15th annual Roy Fujimoto Senior Scholarships.

The scholarships, sponsored by KTA Super Stores and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, will go to four graduating seniors in recognition of their BIIF athletic accomplishments, academic record and community service. Each recipient will receive $1,500 college scholarships to offset the cost of tuition, books, and room and board expenses.

Eligibility

Student-athletes attending a high school in the BIIF and participating in BIIF sports, who are in their senior year and who are attending a college or university next fall, are eligible.

Qualities considered

• Athletic achievement, which shall include contributions to the team; versatility in BIIF sports; sportsmanship and dedication; and character and behavior, on and off the field.

• Academic record, which shall include grade point average throughout high school, high school course load and SAT/ACT scores.

• Community service, which shall include school activities outside of athletics and involvement in the Big Island community.

Nominations

Only official BIIF senior scholarships nomination forms will be accepted for consideration.

Students must submit the following items:

• A typed nomination form signed by the student’s school principal and athletic director.

• An official transcript and SAT/ACT scores.

• A personal statement no longer than 200 words.

• Letters of reference (two maximum).

• A photograph (preferably a head-and-shoulder senior portrait) with printed name on back of photo.

The selection committee will not accept stapled or incomplete applications.

Students may include supporting material on six one-sided sheets (8.5 inches by 11 inches) of paper. Enclose all materials, including nomination forms, personal statements, letters of reference and photographs in one package.

Students must submit complete applications (mailing address on nomination form) by 3 p.m. April 11.

The selection committee will not accept materials submitted via facsimile transmission or applications received after April 26.

Applications are available in each BIIF school’s athletic director’s office or view the website biifsports.com under scholarships.

HIGA golf tourney

A six-person team golf tournament, sponsored by Hawaii Island Golf Association/Hilo Muni Golf Club, will take place Sunday, April 30, at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

All golfers having current HIGA/Hilo Muni Golf Club handicaps are eligible to enter the competition.

A $120 team entry fee ($20 per person) must be paid in check and turned in with an entry form to the Muni pro shop. The entry deadline for the semi-annual competition is April 25.

The entry fee includes the cost for bento lunch after the tournament but does not include green fees or cart rental. The remainder of the money collected will be distributed as team and individual prizes.

Hilo High fundraiser

The Hilo Athletic Committee in partnership with the Hilo High School Athletic Department will hold its annual Winter-Spring Steak-fry Fundraiser on Sunday, April 2 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school gym to support the school’s athletic department. Gummy Bears softball

The Gummy Bears softball team holds open practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Ainaola Park softball field starting at 4:30 p.m. for players in the 14-and-under divisions.

The Pirates Organization affiliate is looking for girls interested in participating in the sport. To participate bring along shoes, a glove and water.
